The Castle

Up here time seems to have stopped, stuck in a moment between past and present. Here eyes are fed with beauty and lost among the profiles of sweet hills.

Naro Castle is a mighty and superb fortress of the 6th century AD, rising in the territory of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the district of Cagli and dominating the valley of Candigliano river. Its shape is peculiar: it resembles the hull of a ship clinging a natural cliff made of the hardest stone. Its position, dominant and proud, is not coincidence: the castle was built to protect the Siccardis from the avidity of the municipality of Cagli during the Medieval period.

WALKING THROUGH NARO IS A BET

This place is unknown to the majority of people because it is out of conventional circuits. What could you find in a small village which nobody even mentions? What could you find in a place lost among the hills running along Candigliano river? A Castle, the Siccardis’ Castle. Curiosity aroused… Who were the Siccardis? And why is this still exiting fortification not known like the others? Is it maybe because it is not so nice? Just the opposite.

The two white -not so smooth- ways coming from Cagli and Secchiano create a space-time vibration. They kidnap the visitors to guide them 800 years back in time, to the Medieval period, where the harsh fights to conquer uplands were a common occurrence. On the way to Naro the sensation of being in another time is really tangible and stronger than in other places. The street is white. Vegetation, made of trees and bushes, covers the sides of the mountains. From the underlying valley you can overhear the bubbling voice of rivers in which some trouts still swim. House are a few, there are no antennas, nor antenna towers or repeaters. The landscape is uncontaminated (who knows for how much longer?) and imagination can soar envisaging knights and ancient disputes. Bend after bend, the feeling of being in another time grows until, at a certain point, after crossing two hills, a valley appears and, as if by magic, a barren mount emerges with a stone building on it… Naro Castle.

The Proud Landlady

She lived in the 13th century AD and her name was Filippa Siccardi. She was the proud landlady of Naro Castle and she declared war to the powerful municipality of Cagli to which her father, Filippo Siccardi, swore allegiance some years before submitting his castle.

History

Naro is “the Siccardi family’s Castle”, it is a powerful fortress, symbolically raised as extreme defence against the avidity of the municipality of Cagli and then against the counts of Urbino, the Montefeltros. The Siccardis were powerful landlords and an ancient Guelph family, which is mentioned in historical reports already since the 11th century.

Restoration

The Castle of Abbadia di Naro was bought in 2008 by the Stocchi family who, after a patient and demanding restoration, opened it to the public in 2013. The intervention brought the Castle back to its ancient splendour, keeping its charm unchanged and combining historic rigour and innovation.

A Treasure arose from the Excavations

Archaeological excavations at Naro Castle had been carried out between 2008 and 2010. 28 spaces (houses, stores, warehouses, granaries, cattlesheds, bakeries, barns, cisterns) had been brought back to light and they now rise in a concentric position surrounding the central core of the castle: the Dwelling of the noble family.

Interesting Facts

The secret passage: there is a tunnel going down from the Castle to the foot of the mountain; the kestrel: our young sentinel; the promenade to the Third Olive Tree, which ventures into the heart of the small forest surrounding the Castle; the ancient cistern inside the Castle and the ice-house: the medieval refrigerating room.
